Even abuse of prescription narcotics or even cigarettes can be a barrier to communication. I encourage parents of teens who abuse drugs/alcohol to take a hard look at their own behavior, too. Kids mimic what is modeled to them. “Do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t work. We as adults must lead by example.
